For reasons we will probably never know, the Chinese have an inexpicable penchant for hanging out in their hotel rooms with their doors open, thereby allowing their cigarette smoke, the din of their pandemonious and cacaphonous card-playing hubbub, and the nauseating stink of their all-powerful baijiu (hard Chinese liquor) to waft out into the hallway and the world at large, thus amplifying for any of the hotel’s resident foriegners the anthropological insights into the life, times and folkways of the country and people that the foriegners surely came to experience in the first place. Right?
